First day in Cubeville

I'm a fan of Scott Adam's works, especially his Dilbert comic series. Although cubicle jokes were a common theme in the comics, I never truly understood what they meant. Not until I stepped into one - my new workplace - today.

After arriving for my first day of work, what greeted me were - yes - cubicles. Rows and columns of them that went as far as the walls of the building allowed. It would almost be impossible to locate someone if not for the helpful name tags by the side of each cubicle. Navigation among the cubicles is akin to walking in a maze. Just that there aren't dead-ends, for a wrong turn would mean ending up in the wrong aisle or side of the office and you simply restart the maze again. Though visually similar, each cubicle had its own distinct flavour, as dictated by the respective dwellers. Mine is still relatively bare and undecorated but I guess in time to come, I, too, will style it according to my preferences.

The first day was pretty light, since they weren't really prepared for me anyway. But I guess I won't be doing much real work until they get me a computer. After all, writing pseudo-code on paper can only get me that far. Oh yes, did I mention? I'm working as a programmer now, a total and absolute deviation from what I studied. It 's kinda sad to say but whatever my degree course had taught me, had little impact on my current job. It's my interest and skills that count. So like, NUS can expect one less grateful alumni and lots of potential donations.
